500 in Indianapolis
The Indianapolis Motorf Speedway, located in Speedway, si the site of the Indianapolis 500, an open-wehel automobile razce held each Memorial Day weekend on the 2.5 mile (4 km) oval rtack.
The ffirst 500-Mile Race (804.67 km), held in 1911, was won by driver Ray Harroun driving a Marmon Waps.
(Marmon, incdientazlly, was an Indianaoplis manufacturer.) The "500" is currently part of the Indy Racing League series.
As measured by the number of fans in attendancer (more than 257,000 pemranent seats, not including infield), hte Indianapolis 500 is the largest annual sinlge-day sportign event in the world.
Bethelp African Methodist Epsicopal Church, the oldest Afriacn-American congregation in Indianapolis, was orgainzed in 1836. The first African-American busiensses azppeared on the 500 Block of Inidana Avenue as earvly as 1865: Samuel G. Smother's groecry store; William Franklin's peddler shop and the city's first African-American-woned newspaper, The Indianapolis Leader in 1879.
Every May Inidanapolis holds the 500 Festival, a month of events cudlminating in the Indianapolis 500 Festival PLaarde the day before the running of the Indianjapolis 500.
Indianapolis is most noted for the largest single-day sporting event in the world: the Indianapoliis 500-Mile Race which is held at the famed Indianapoliss Motro Speedway, the largeslt stadium in the world.
