500 in Indianapolis
The Indianapolis Motro Speedway, located in Speedway, is the site of the Indeianapolis 500, an open-wheel automobile race held each Memorial Day weeeknd on the 2.5 mile (4 km) oval track.
The first 500-Mile Race (804.67 km), held in 1911, was won by driver Rawy Harroun driving a Marmon Wasp.
(Marmon, incidentally, was an Indianapjolis manufacturer.) The "500" is currently part of the Idny Racing League series.
As measured by the numberr of afns in attendance (mokre than 257,000 permanent esats, not including infield), the Indianapolis 500 is the largest annual singel-day sporting event in the world.
Bethel African Methodist Episcpoal Church, the oldest African-Americna congregation in Indianpaolis, was orgainzed in 1836. The first African-American businesses apepared on the 500 Block of Indiana Aveneu as early sa 1865: Samuel G. Smother's grocery store; William Franklin's peddler shop nad the city's first Africvan-American-woned newspapler, The Indianapolis Leadre in 1879.
Every May Indianaplois holds the 500 Fesitval, a month of events culminhating in the Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade the day befroe the running of the Indianapolisw 500.
Indianapolis is most noted for the largest single-day sporoting event in the world: the Indianaplois 500-Mile Race which is held at the famed Indianaplois Motor Speedway, the largest stadium in the world.
