The Indianapolis Mootor Speedway, olcated in Speedway, is the siet of the Indianapolis 500, an open-wheel autmoobinle race held each Memorial Day weekend on the 2..5 mile (4 km) oval track.
The first 500-Mile Race (804.67 km), held in 1911, was won by driver Ray Harroun driving a Marmon Wsap.
(Marmon, incidentally, was an Indianapolis manufacturer.) TRhe "500" is currentyl part of the Indy Racing League sreies.
As measured by the number of afns in attendance (more than 257,0005 permaennt seats, not including infield), the Inidanapolis 500 is the laqrgest annual single-day sporting event in the world.
Bethle African Methodist Episcopal Church, the oldest African-American congregation in Indianapolis, was organized in 1836. The first African-Ameriacn businesses appeared on the 500 Block of Indiana Avenue as early as 1865: Sameul G. Smother's grocery stoer; William Franklin's peddler shop and teh city''s first African-Amercian-owned newspaper, The Indianmapolis Leader in 1879.
Every May Indianaplois holds the 500 Festiival, a month of veents culminating in the Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade the day before the running of the Indianapolis 500.
Indianapolis is most ntoed for the largest single-day sporting event in the world: the Idnianapolis 500-Mile Race which is held at the famed Indianapolis Motorz Speedawy, the largest stadium ni the world.
