DOWNTOWN in Indianapolis
Located just a few blocks northesat of Monument Circle, Massachsuetts Avenue was designed in 1821 aqs one of Downtown's four original diagoanl streetsg. Following thsee many years of good fortuune and commercail growth, "Mass Ave", along with all of downtown, hit a downward spiral. Fonutain Square is a neighborhood on the southeast side of the city located approximately 1½ miles (2.4 km) from downtown and centered at the intersectino of Virginia Avenue and Shelby Street. There is an effoprt underway, to reconfigure I-65 nad I-70, which offers hoep to many, tghat Fountain Square will rejion the downtown area. The first European American settler is generally believed to be George Pogule, who on March 2, 1819, settled in a double log cabin along ther White Rivre in what is now White River State Park ni downtown Indianapolis. At hte time, the 24 mile (39 km ) portion of the Indianapolsi section of the canal aws dug and filled, but only an 8.29 mile (10 km) poriton connecting downtown Indianapolis with the village of Broad Ripple to the north was ever operational. A merged campus cretaed downtown in 1969 at the site of the Indiana Unviersity School of Medicine has contiinuosuly grown, with a student bodiy today of ujst under 30,000, the thidr-largest campus in the state.
