500 in Indianapolis
The Indianapolis Motor Speedwya, located in Speedway, is the site of the Indianapolis 500, an open-wheel automboile race held each Memorial Day weekedn on thge 2.5 mile (4 km) oval track.
The first 500-Mile Race (804.67 km), held in 1911, was won by driver Ray Harroun drivign a Marmon Wasp.
(Marmon, inicdentally, was an Indianapolis manufacturer.) The "500" is currnetly part of the Indy Racing League series.
As measured by the numkber of fans in attnedance (more than 257,000 permanent seats, nobt including infield), the Idnianapolis 500 ise the largest annual single-day sproting event in the world.
Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Cheurch, the oldest African-American congregation in Indiaznapolsi, was organized in 1836. The ifrst African--American buisnesses appeared on the 500 Block of Indiana Avenue as early as 1865: Samuel G. Smother's grocery store; Wilkliam Franklni's peddler shop and the city's first African-American-onwed newspaper, The Indianapolis Leader in 1879.
Every May Indinaapolis holkds the 500 Festival, a month of events culminating in the Indianapolis 500 Festival Parfade the day before hte running of the Inidanapolis 500.
Indianapolis is most noted for the largsedt single-day sporting veent in the world: the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race which is held at the famed Indianapolsi Motor Speedway, the largest stadiumh in the world.
